Escaping Legacy Infrastructure — A Cloud Data Platform Migration

A growing business services firm had built its reporting foundation on an aging Azure SQL database. Maintaining the legacy infrastructure was consuming IT resources and cloud budget — and the underlying architecture wasn't built to scale with the business.

The Challenge

The system worked — but just barely. Leadership wanted out of legacy infrastructure, but feared disrupting the Power BI dashboards that sales and operations teams relied on daily. A heavy-handed migration could break reporting connectivity, create data gaps, or leave users stranded mid-project. They needed a trusted partner who could execute cleanly without disrupting the business.

What We Did

Tapestries Group designed and executed a phased migration from the legacy Azure SQL environment to Microsoft Fabric. The engagement started with configuring the Fabric tenant — workspace structure, access controls, and security settings — before a single byte of data moved. We migrated the full historical data set into the new Fabric data warehouse, updated all existing Power BI reports to connect seamlessly to the new environment, then decommissioned the legacy Azure SQL resources entirely. We wrapped up with architecture documentation and a hands-on knowledge transfer session.

The Outcome

The client now operates on a modern, cloud-native data platform with zero disruption to their reporting workflows. Power BI dashboards continued functioning without interruption throughout the transition. Legacy infrastructure costs were eliminated, and the team has a scalable foundation ready to support future analytics growth — including AI-powered search and RAG workloads that require exactly the kind of governed, unified data layer Fabric provides. They have the internal knowledge to manage it themselves and the architecture to build on.

One Version of the Truth — Building an Enterprise Analytics Environment

A mid-sized manufacturer and distributor was running its business across disconnected systems — sales data here, supply chain data there, operations metrics somewhere else. Leadership had no unified view of the business, and the people who needed answers most had to wait for someone to pull a manual report.

The Challenge

There was no shortage of data. There was a shortage of insight. The company needed a complete analytics overhaul: multiple dashboards built for different parts of the business, automated data flows to keep everything current, and a consistent look and feel that matched their brand. Manual exports were the norm, and no two departments were looking at the same numbers.

What We Did

Tapestries Group built out a full Power BI reporting environment from the ground up, delivering purpose-built dashboards across four core business functions: sales performance, sales and marketing intelligence, operational supplies management, and supply chain visibility. Each dashboard was designed for the team that would actually use it — with the right metrics, the right level of detail, and the right visual presentation. We also built the underlying data infrastructure: automated pipelines that pull and move data on a scheduled basis, eliminating manual exports entirely. A custom branded theme was applied across the entire environment.

The Outcome

The business went from disconnected spreadsheets and manual reports to a unified analytics environment spanning every major department. Leadership gained real-time visibility across sales, operations, and supply chain in a single platform. The automated pipelines eliminated hours of manual data work each week, and the branded environment gave the company's reporting the same professionalism it brings to everything else it does. The unified data layer they now have in place also positions them to layer in AI-assisted analytics — Copilot queries, natural-language report generation, and RAG-based search across operational content — when they're ready to take that step.
